My Images Of India

A page from my sketch book
a

It was a very lucky Friday 13th of February I arrived in India, to spend two sun filled weeks, with my sister Nicola and her family in Bangalore. They arrived here from Warwickshire in the UK on “their adventure" two years ago.

My sister’s life changing experience has impacted on my life of art.

I am an artist and I work not only with paint but with textiles, about five years ago, I went through a very stressful time and in order to cope I found comfort in stitching onto old woollen blankets.

My subjects are landscapes and figures developed from intense periods of drawing and painting. I layer my experience into the landscape so that it becomes psychologically charged with my own memories, emotions, narratives, dreams, and poems.

The passion and freedom encountered in the immediacy of sketching is developed and channelled through paintings, and then consolidated into textile pieces. Labour and repetition are central to this process and depending on the scale the finished embroidered textile can take many months to complete.

My sister had organised a hectic itinerary, to share as much of Indian culture as possible during my short stay.
On my first morning I learnt about the fascinating art of Indian block printing under the shade of mango trees. This was with Poonam in Whitefield’s on the Nallur Halli main road in Bangalore.
We printed, intricate repeating designs with hand carved wooden blocks onto white cotton cloths.

The next day we walked through glades of patterned palm trees in Palm Meadows, then through the chaos of the city, to reach the small multi-coloured painted villages.
Animals such as cows, goats and dogs were in abundance, amongst buildings, temples and swarming traffic, so integrated that they weaved with man amongst the tirade of vehicles.
The intensity of colour is intoxicating and exhilarating, everywhere I turned colour and pattern overwhelmed me, even coloured washing, hanging against the bright walls became exciting!

I was amazed by the fruits, vegetables and flowers piled high on rickety wooden carts by the side of the red dusty roads.
I loved the petals and flowers arranged artfully floating in water bowls, the chalk patterns drawn on the pavements, the kaleidoscope of colourful clothing, saris and textiles.

In my sketch book I worked with pastels on different coloured papers to record not only what I could see but how this new environment made me feel.
My drawing started to change, I altered my colour combinations, and the rhythm of my mark making became more intense and complicated.
Working instinctively I found my landscapes were becoming more exotic, taking on an eastern appearance.

I will share more of my experiences  and drawings of India in my next blog post.

Still Drawing & Stitching in 2015!

I have recently had problems logging into my blog, in fact I thought perhaps all was lost, but thankfully and miraculously I am now back to blogging!
So much has changed with social media since my tentative steps into sharing my work on my blog.
Facebook, Flickr, instagram to name a few and I have only recently acquired an iphone!
This year I have been using instagram as it's so easy and quick to upload my photos , if you use it you can find me here  http://instagram.com/michalagyetvai
I have been stitching more than drawing during our cold Winter months, at the moment I'm trying to finish my very large landscape based on the poem by Stephane Mallarme L'après-midi d'un faune and this inspired Claude Debussy's  music of the same name.
I find the music incredibly inspiring, the flute mysterious, it takes me on a journey through a deep colourful, enchanted  Summer forest.

A Mural For Kenilworth

In the Summer I spent time painting a mural for Clinton Primary school in Kenilworth.
This large area is their new art zone with several music rooms leading from it. I wanted to paint the landscapes that inspire me, the ones from my own childhood memories, the landscapes in Warwickshire and the changing seasons.
I hope these murals will inspire the children in art, music, dance and poetry.

Exhibition "Powerful Forces"

Hello,

The exhibition at The Michael Heseltine Gallery has been open for three weeks and we have now have just two weeks until it closes on Thursday 13th of February.
I thought I would share some of my images of the exhibition which I have shown on my  facebook
page.
I will be there the next two Sundays with the sculptor George Wagstaffe ( we are open 10.00am until 4.00pm)
The exhibition is open Monday to Friday 9.00am until 5.00pm.
I managed just about to get through the opening despite a heavy cold, I think the adrenaline got me through it!

Just to let you know I will not be exhibiting at the NEC this year despite one of my stitched pieces featuring on the front of The Fashion Embroidery Stitch leaflets!!
They took the image when I was at the show last year.
I decided I wanted to spend more time on my work so I had something new to show another year and also I had other commitments.

It's been a while since I have updated my blog which is due to a very busy few weeks where lots of things have been happening!
A few weeks ago I met Dawn Harris who is the artist in residence at Ragley Hall near Alcester, not far from Stratford Upon Avon.
I visited Dawn at her Gallery and studios which is part of the very impressive Ragley Hall estate and is within a section of the very old stable blocks.
Dawn has set up the studio space with Gallery as part of her residency, to create an artists community, to support artists professional development through projects, exhibitions and critical discourse.
I'm excited to say that I am now one of the new studio artists and I am looking forward to working  along side Dawn and the artist at Ragley.
I will be able to spend  time outside in the beautiful surrounding gardens and  grounds, which will no doubt have a huge influence on my art practise.

To begin with, I will be at Ragley a couple of days a week as I am also in the process of organising my Open Studios over in Coventry with the artist George Wagstaffe.
The Gallery, studios are open to visitors most weekends and some week days, you can find opening times on Dawn's website here and details of art courses with Dawn.
Please double check before you visit, as Ragley Hall has varied opening times. or contact Dawn via her facebook page here ( The Gallery will sometimes be closed in the holidays)
My next blog post will introduce you to Dawns art work, including the other studio artists.
Bye for now

"Within The Forest Of Threads"

Here are some new pieces which I am working on directly from my sketch book.
I still have many paintings of landscapes which are crying out to me to be stitched but I felt compelled to work with these new ideas.
I have been asked if I could run a few one hour workshops for Maderia threads at The Fashion, Embroidery, Stitch Show in March, when I get more details I will share them here.

Faces In The Landscape

I'm not at all up to date with my blog compared to my face book and flickr pages which is why I have uploaded these images as a mosaic.
I have been using many different methods of recording and documenting ideas, these quick sketches, apart from one, have been on my ipad ( a wonderful Xmas present).
The figures have come about quite naturally, each one emotionally linked to the landscape.

When I was a child I lived in a small Warwickshire village surrounded by woods and fields.
I spent many hours playing in these surroundings, making dens, climbing trees and playing with all nature had to offer.
Not far from the local church, where I played, was a beautiful country track which was free from traffic as it led to open fields.
I will never forget the day when all the mature Elm trees which lined that hedgerow had been cut down, each one lying side by side in full leaf.
At first my friends and I played amongst those fallen branches, excited by the natural climbing frame, unaware of the impact to our local landscape.
A few days latter we returned to find no trees,  I remember to this day the devastation I felt at seeing the tree stumps.
My vivid memories of this this time form the philosophy of the my art work, my feelings are linked to my landscape.
I will update my blog again very soon as I have more stitch work to share with you ( you can find more recent images on my face book page).
Bye for now.

Art Threads

Stitching my landscape

                                 Compton Verney

                                The Workshop at Compton Verney

I have been meaning to blog for quite sometime, firstly about the workshop I ran at Compton Verney which was two weeks ago.
It was a great pleasure to teach in such beautiful surroundings and everyone was inspired to create pieces all of which were individual, different and experimental.
The emphasis was on trying out new techniques while interpreting their own studies from sketch book work.

Last week I visited the  Pre-Raphaelites  exhibition at Tate Britain, a fantastic exhibition which includes many textile works including William Morris's four poster bed.
I admired the painting by William Holman Hunt inspired from verses of the poem by Alfred Lord Tennyson , The Lady of Shalott.

There she weaves by night and day
A magic web with colours gay.
She has heard a whisper say,
A curse is on her if she stay
  To look down to Camelot.
She knows not what the 'curse' may be,
  And so she weaveth steadily,
And little other care hath she,
  The Lady of Shalott.
This vivid painting rich in colour, painted like a heavy Victorian tapestry depicts the Lady Of Shallot, tangled in her threads!

Tomorrow I will be joining in with the festive fun at The Herbert Art Gallery for the Making Merry which will have many handmade and vintage stalls.
I will be there to help my Mum on her vintage stall and I will display a few of my small brooches.

Then it will be back to working on larger pieces for my display "British Romantic Landscapes" at Fashion, Embroidery, Stitch in the NEC in March!
